CHARACTER INFO
❥ Name: Keith
❥ Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
❥ Canon Point: Post S7
❥ Fandom OC Approval: N/A
❥ History: link for the history. Keith is in most episodes, so follow the links through season 7
❥ CRAU?: N/A
❥ Personality:
The majority of Keith’s personality can be summed up in one word: rebel. He’s that edgy cool kid that hates everyone and keeps to himself, the lone wolf that’s challenging authority and fighting “the system”. From the outside, he looks like every other kid with a rough upbringing and a bad attitude. While all of this is technically true, there’s a lot more to him hiding beneath his tough exterior.
Keith is a fighter. He’s spent his whole life fighting, to be heard, to survive, to find the truth. His Galra mother, Krolia, left while he was still a baby to make sure his existence would stay secret, and to protect the ones she loved after Keith’s father was nearly killed by a Galra patrol that had found her on Earth. Keith apparently gained a lot of his bravado and fearlessness from his father, a firefighter who died in a house fire when Keith was still young. Essentially orphaned, he’s spent his life bouncing around from place to place, looking for somewhere to belong, and not finding it until Shiro takes him under his wing. When Shiro disappears on the Kerberos mission, the stability that Keith had finally found for himself shatters, and he’s back to the angry, scared kid he used to be, trying to uncover government secrets to find the man that’s become a brother to him.
Keith has led a rough life, and has a lot of sensitive triggers. With his hot temper, he’s quick to lose patience and fly off the handle when he’s irritated. In more recent seasons, he’s learned to channel his rage into obsessive training. Perhaps not the best outlet, but it has helped him maintain his focus. With the help of his friends and team, he’s learning to recognize his own value, and is starting to become more comfortable around others.
Shiro had always intended for Keith to become the leader in his absence, and it was something Keith had fought every step of the way. Fear held him back, primarily fear of losing Shiro. It wasn’t something he ever wanted to consider, and yet it became real. Forced into a position he never wanted, Keith’s recklessness often got the better of him, and very nearly killed his team more than once. This only sent him into a downward spiral of self-loathing, until a little boost from his team and sheer reality forced him to step it up and let go of his pride and fear. He learned that what his team needed was someone level headed enough to consider all possibilities and not charge off without thinking. Though it was difficult for him, Keith reluctantly learned to face the music and become a tactician rather than just a soldier.
However, much of this seemed to erase itself when Shiro returned. Keith removed himself completely from the situation, forcing the Black Lion to accept Shiro (who wasn’t really Shiro, but that’s a long story) and putting the team at risk yet again. He’d learned that he was Galra, the alien race that they had only known as the enemy, and had lost much of his confidence. The assertive leader retreated back into a soldier, this time joining up with the Blades of Marmora instead of staying with his friends due to sheer insecurity. Finding his long-lost mother, however, changed everything for Keith. They spent two years in the Quantum Abyss, where Keith finally seemed to find peace with his Galra heritage and recognize that his parents were both good people. Being Galra no longer defined him or made him a lesser being. He found strength both in Krolia’s story and in knowing that he was her son.
With much of his rocky history finally resolved, Keith has found an inner peace and comfort with himself that is entirely new to him. While he certainly still has moments of doubt and insecurity, he’s come to accept himself for who he truly is, and realize that his friends and family still love and want him around. He has finally emerged as the true leader that the Black Lion and Shiro both saw in him when no one else could. Self-assured, strong, and capable of making the hard choices, Keith has become the literal and metaphorical head of Voltron.
